First things first, all of these activities are free and really worth your while. The reason the title says cheap and not free is because it all depends on what you do during these activities. We all know about the free tours around big cities, but we don’t always think about the tips that we should give the guide at the end of the tour. Going window shopping/mercado shopping is free, but if you really like something, you will most likely buy it. There’s nothing wrong with this, but I can’t say that these things are free; they are CHEAP. And let’s face it, cheap is pretty darn good. So where are my TOP 4: Cheap things to do in Mexico City.

1- Free Taco Crawl Tour, La Condesa

This is a must while travelling to Mexico City. You can never try to many taco places and you can never drink too much Tequila. Actually that’s not true, Tequila is dangerous, and drinking too many shots can result in blackouts, vomiting, next day headache, and many other negative symptoms… we all know this.

Anyway, my friend was the one that brought me to this tour, and I really didn’t know what to expect. Turns out, I had a blast, and had lots of food and lots of booze. The tour (Strawberry Tours) usually starts at 7pm, and can go on for 2-3 hours, depending on the time you decide to leave. You meet up in La Condesa, there's a total of three stop during the tour. I won’t talk about the places we stopped at, since some of these places might change depending on your tour, but the stops that we did were amazing, and our tour guide was super fun. Tacos and tequila (or Mezcal), what more can you want?

2- Free Coyoacan/Frida tour

Same tour operator then the Tacos Crawl Tour, the Coyoacan tour was one of my favorite neighborhood to visit. It’s home to Frida Kahlo’s house, the Plaza Santa Catarina and the Coyoacan market. We got really lucky, because while we were there, there was a Tamales Fair, which I believe only happens once a year. We got to try so many different types of tamales from all around central and south America; so tasty! Then a coffee shop, and a churros stop. It couldn’t get any better than this.

3- Mercado shopping.

Mexico City has so many markets, it’s had to decide which one to see and which one to skip. Here are my two favorite: La Lagunilla and El Bazar Sabado.

La Lagunilla has different sections, and you can find anything from food, clothes, furniture, vintage trinquets, basically everything. The best part for me was the vintage section. It was so interesting to see the different things they were selling, from old pictures, to jewelry, to clothes and furnitures.

El Bazar Sabado was definitely my favourite one. It was more artisanal, detailed pieces of artwork that reminded me of the Disney movie Coco. I found cute shoes, jewelry and paintings. There was so many colors around me, my eyes kept jumping from shop to shop, without finding the same thing twice. It was incredible and definitely worth at least 2-3 hours to check it out.

* We want to make sure you have the same tools as I did when I was planning my trip, if you need any other help, check you Lonely Planet's Mexico City guide here:

4- Museo Soumaya, Polanco.

It’s the most visited museum in Mexico City for a reason. First of all, it’s free, second of all, it’s huge and finally, you can find art pieces of some of the most famous artists in the world. We are talking: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, just to name a few. The museum has 7 floors including the entrance, and the building was one of the craziest architectures I’ve ever seen. If you’re not into museums at all, then the outside of the building is enough for you to just stop by and take pictures.

Stay tuned for other articles on Mexico, I'll be posting one article a week. for the next couple of weeks. I'm really excited to share with you my experience in this country!
