Top 4 things to do in Querétaro, Mexico

Santiago de Queretaro was my second stop while traveling through Mexico. Two weeks before I left Montreal, I met someone that was moving to Queretaro and he invited me to stay with him at anytime. Keep in mind, I was on money-saving mode and I was trying to figure out the best way to spend less. The timing was perfect. I stayed in the hotel room that his new job provided him and I had the place to myself most of the time because of his hectic work schedule. I had free accommodation and great wifi (believe it or not, hostel wifi sometimes suck!), however I didn’t get to meet travellers since the hotel was mostly filled with business people… I still had a great time of course, and I’m grateful that I could save money during my stay there.

As for Santiago de Queretaro, I didn’t know much about it before my journey there. It’s a two hour bus ride, north of Mexico City. You can easily find great bus tickets on Busbud.com (which is where I booked all of my transports). I highly recommend it; everytime I had a problem with with my schedule or anything, they were extremely helpful in a timely manner.

1- Visit the Centro Historico

The Centro Historico is a great place to hang out and admire the amazing buildings. Most of them have great colors and really cool architecture. You can walk alongside the canal and cross the bridge at several entry points to visit the other side of the town. I would also recommend going to the center plaza, where they have different activities throughout the day/night. While I was there there was a children’s party, with clowns and people dancing everywhere. Just hanging out there was great entertainment, I really feel like I was part of the local scene. The people from the Queretaro are extremely sweet and will help you with anything you need. I realized after visiting several different Mexican towns, that people of Mexico are extremely welcoming.

2- Day trip to San Miguel de Allende

Again, book your bus ticket with BusBud! It’s a 1h30 bus ride away from the bus terminus. (You will probably have to take an Uber to get to the terminus, but don’t worry, Ubers are very cheap in Mexico, and a better option than taking taxis.)

I will post an entire different post on what to do in San Miguel de Allende. This place came highly recommended when I asked the locals what to do in their town, which is funny because San Miguel de Allende is not in Queretaro. I just knew I couldn’t miss the chance to do this small day trip

3- Eat at a fancy restaurant

Depending on your budget, this might not be the best thing for you to do, but I just had to write about my experience at Restorante Sanlucar. It was the only upscale restaurant I ate at during my trip (except when my mom came to visit me, hehe). It wasn’t really in my plans, but my friend invited me to go and I couldn’t say no. The food was to die for. I had the Four Cheese Ravioli, and tasted pretty much all of my friend’s plates (the ones without meat). I tried different pastas, pizza, seafood (the calamari was amazing), everything was so tasty. I’m telling you, even the sauces to dip your bread in was delicious.

4- Los Arcos de Querétaro

I regret this deeply, but I didn’t get the chance to go check it out. I only saw this wall from the highway when I drove passed it. If ever I find myself in Santiago de Queretaro again, I can guarantee that I will make the effort to see this great historical landmark. From what I saw on the road, it was so majestic, and I can only imagine what it would be like to see it from the ground up. AMAZING.

*Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the Los Arcos.
